Õppeaine eesmärk on:
- anda ülevaade globaalsetest keskkonnaprobleemidest, keskkonnakaitsest, inimtegevuse mõjust keskkonnale ning sellega kaasnevatest muutustest;
- tutvustada jätkusuutlikke majandusmudeleid;
- anda ülevaade ringmajandusega seotud poliitikatest ja seadusandlusest;
- valmistada üliõpilased ette ringmajandusel ja lineaarsel majandusmudelil põhinevate ärimudelite tuvastamiseks ning muutmiseks sisendi andmiseks;
- selgitada ressursside (materjalide) aineringi, keskkonnamõju ja ringlussevõtu võimalusi;
- anda ülevaade erinevatest keskkonnamõjude hindamise meetoditest: elutsükli analüüs, süsinikujalajälje arvutused jm;
- anda ülevaade kestliku arengu ja ringmajanduse põhimõtete rakendamisest erinevates valdkondades (energia ja keskkond, maavarad, toiduainete, puidu-, plasti-, metalli-, tekstiili- ja rõivatööstus, arvutite, elektroonikatööstus, keemiatööstus, ehitussektor, põllumajandus, transport jm).

The aims of this course are to:
- provide an overview of global environmental problems, environmental protection, the impact of human activity on the environment and the accompanying changes;
- introduce sustainable business models;
- provide an overview of policies and legislation related to the circular economy;
- prepare students to identify and provide input for changing business models based on the circular economy and the linear economic model;
- explain the cycle of resources (materials), environmental impact and recycling options;
- provide an overview of various methods for assessing environmental impacts: life cycle analysis, carbon footprint calculations, etc.;
- provide an overview of the implementation of sustainable development and circular economy principles in various fields (energy and environment, mineral resources, food, wood, plastic, metal, textile and apparel industry, computers, electronics industry, chemical industry, civil engineering sector, agriculture, transport, etc.).

Õppeaine läbinud üliõpilane:
1. arvestab globaalsete keskkonnaprobleemidega oma erialases tegevuses;
2. tunneb jätkusuutliku majanduse (ringmajandus, tasaareng, sotsiaalne ettevõtlus) eripärasid ning teeb ettepanekuid ärimudelite jätkusuutlikumaks ümberkorraldamiseks;
3. kirjeldab erinevaid meetodeid, millega on võimalik hinnata erinevaid keskkonnamõjusid ja tuvastab toodete, teenuste, materjalide ning protsesside kestlikumaid valikuid;
4. oskab süsteemselt läheneda valdkondlikele kestlikkusega seotud väljakutsetele;
5. kirjeldab materjalivoogusid (kaevandamisest, töötlemisest, valmistamisest kuni ringlussevõtu ja taaskasutamiseni);
6. kirjeldab põhilisi (mineraal)toormete tüüpe ja nende nõudlust eri tööstusharudes;
7. väärtustab tööstuses ja igapäevaelus kasutavaid materjale ning mõtestab jäätmete kasutuselevõtu olulisust kestlikus majandusarengus.

After completing this course, the student:
1. takes global environmental issues into account in their professional activities;
2. knows the specific features of a sustainable economy (circular economy, balanced development, social entrepreneurship) and makes proposals for a more sustainable restructuring of business models;
3. describes different methods that can be used to assess different environmental impacts and identifies more sustainable choices for products, services, materials and processes;
4. is able to systematically approach sectoral sustainability challenges;
5. describes material flows (from mining, processing, manufacturing to recycling and reuse);
6. describes the main types of (mineral) raw materials and their demand in different industries;
7. values materials used in the industry and everyday life and understands the importance of waste utilization in sustainable economic development.

Globaalsed keskkonnaprobleemid. Inimtegevuse mõju keskkonnale ning sellega kaasnevad muutused. Keskkonnakaitse, sh elurikkuse säilitamine. Jätkusuutlikud majandusmudelid (sh ringmajandus, tasaareng, sotsiaalne ettevõtlus). Ringmajanduse põhimõisted ja põhimõtted, erinevus lineaarsest majandusmudelist. Ringmajanduse olulisus, seotud seadusandlus ja poliitikad, Euroopa strateegiad, nende kujundamine ning mõju ulatus. Jätkusuutlikud ärimudelid, ühiskonnad ja üksikisiku vastutus. Jäätmed, olelusring ja toote elutsükkel. Erinevad keskkonnamõjude hindamise meetodid: elutsükli analüüs, süsiniku jalajälje arvutused. Kestliku arengu ja ringmajanduse põhimõtete rakendamine erinevates valdkondades: energia ja keskkond, maavarad, toiduainete, puidu-, plasti-, metalli-, tekstiili- ja rõivatööstus, arvutite, elektroonika ning optikaseadmete, elektriseadmete tööstus, keemiatööstus, ehitussektor, põllumajandus, transport jm. Rohekeemia põhimõtted ja mõõdikud ning kuidas nende abil analüüsida ringmajanduse meetmeid keskkonna- ja elusõbralikumas keemiatööstuses. Uued materjalid tööstusjäätmete baasil. Biomajandus ringmajanduse kontekstis. Materjalid ja nende ringlussevõtu võimalused. Ringmajanduse rakendamine ehitussektoris.

Global environmental problems. The impact of human activity on the environment and the changes that accompany it. Environmental protection, including the preservation of biodiversity. Sustainable economic models (including circular economy, sustainable development, social entrepreneurship). Basic concepts and principles of the circular economy, the difference from the linear economic model. The importance of the circular economy, related legislation and policies, European strategies, their design and the scope of impact. Sustainable business models, societies and individual responsibility. Waste, life cycle and product life cycle. Different methods of assessing environmental impacts: life cycle analysis, carbon footprint calculations. Application of the principles of sustainable development and circular economy in various fields: energy and environment, mineral resources, food, wood, plastic, metal, textile and apparel industry, computers, electronics and optical equipment, electrical equipment industry, chemical industry, civil engineering sector, agriculture, transport, etc. Principles and metrics of green chemistry and how to use them to analyse circular economy measures in a more environmentally and life-friendly chemical industry. New materials based on industrial waste. Bioeconomy in the context of the circular economy. Materials and their recycling options. Implementation of the circular economy in the civil engineering sector.
