VERSION SPECIFIC DATA
course aims in Estonian
Õppeaine eesmärk on:
- luua kaasaegsel teadmistel põhinev vundament ilma- ja kliiimaprotsesside kirjeldamiseks ja analüüsimiseks;
- tekitada arusaamine füüsikaprotsesside rakendamisest atmosfääri käitumise (ilm ja kliima) seletamisel;
- näitlikustada atmosfääri seosed teiste Maa süsteemidega.
course aims in English
The aim of this course is to:
- establish foundation for describing and analyzing weather and climate processes based on modern scientific knowledge;
- develop the understanding of application of physics principles in explaining the atmospheric behavior (weather and climate);
- demonstrate the links of atmosphere to other Earth systems.
learning outcomes in the course in Est.
Aine läbinud üliõpilane:
- suudab kirjeldada hetke ilmasituatsiooni kaasaegse teadusliku mõistete pagasi abil;
- oskab selgitada atmosfääri ehituse ja ilma- ja kliimanähtuste füüsikalisi põhjuseid;
- suudab lahendada lihtsamaid arvutuslike ülesandeid meteoroloogias ja klimatoloogias;
- oskab näha atmosfääri seoseid teiste Maa süsteemidega ja kasutust igapäevaelu rakendustes.
learning outcomes in the course in Eng.
After completing this course the student:
- is capable of describing weather situation using modern scientific terminology;
- can explain physical causes behind atmospheric structure and weather and climate phenomena;
- can solve simpler calculation problems in meteorology and climatology;
- is able to recognize links of atmosphere to other Earth’s systems and usage in everyday applications.
brief description of the course in Estonian
Antakse ülevaade tänapäeva atmosfääriteaduste ajaloost. Kirjeldatakse atmosfääri ehitust ja koostist. Selgitatakse süsteemi Päike-Maa olemust ja toimimist. Antakse ülevaade kiirgusrežiimist, atmosfäärioptikast, õhuniiskusest, pilvede moodustumisest, sademetest, globaalsest tsirkulatsioonist, kohalikest tuultest, õhumassidest ja frontidest. Selgitatakse ohtlike ilmastikunähtuste tekkimise põhjusi. Kirjeldatakse ilmaprognoosi koostamise kaasaegseid meetodeid.
brief description of the course in English
The course gives an overview on the history of the atmospheric science; describes the structure and composition of the atmosphere; explains the nature of the system Sun-Earth; gives an overview on the radiation regime, atmospheric optics, air moisture, cloud formation, precipitation, large-scale and local circulation, winds, air masses and fronts. The mechanisms of hazardous weather phenomena are explained. The course describes modern methods of the weather forecast. Interaction of atmosphere with bounding surfaces (ocean, lithosphere, and biosphere) and pollution of the atmosphere are discussed. The difference between weather and climate, methods of climate description and distribution of global climate regions are explained.
