VERSION SPECIFIC DATA
course aims in Estonian
course aims in English
The objective of the course is to introduce students to various types of future fuels, their specific characteristics, and the environmental principles associated with their use. The course provides foundational knowledge of safety engineering in the handling of these fuels and presents both current and recommended regulatory requirements for their application in transport and maritime contexts.

Õppeaine läbinud üliõpilane:
- hindab globaalseid keskkonnaprobleeme, mis on seotud fossiilkütuste ja alternatiivsete kütuseliikide kasutamisega;
- mõistab jätkusuutliku majanduse põhimõtteid ning nende seost tulevikukütuste laiemale kasutuselevõtule;
- rakendab keskkonnamõjude hindamise meetodeid, et teha kestlikumaid valikuid kütuste tootmisprotsessides;
- suudab süsteemselt läheneda transpordi ja merenduse valdkonna kestlikkusega seotud väljakutsetele;
- seostab tulevikukütuste ja nende tootmistehnoloogiate arengut oma eriala tulevikutrendidega;
- mõistab regulatsioonide ja ehitusnõuete vajadust laevadele, mis kasutavad tulevikukütuseid;
- arvestab ohutustehnika puhul määramatuse ja varuteguriga andmepõhiste otsuste tegemisel.

After completing this course the student:
- recognizes and evaluates global environmental challenges related to fossil fuels and alternative fuel types;
- understands the principles of a sustainable economy and how they relate to the adoption of future fuels;
- applies environmental impact assessment methods to identify more sustainable fuel production processes;
- approaches sustainability-related challenges in transport and maritime sectors with a systematic mindset;
- relates technological advancements in future fuel production to trends within their professional field;
- interprets the need for regulatory frameworks and construction standards for vessels using future fuels;
- makes informed safety decisions by considering uncertainty and safety margins in data-driven contexts.
brief description of the course in Estonian
brief description of the course in English
The course is necessary to introduce the use of new types of fuels that are currently used to a limited extent in transport but are expected to be adopted more widely in the near future. It also aims to promote a culture of safety and raise awareness related to these fuels. The main focus of the course is on maritime-related issues, usage stages, and safety techniques, as the quantities of fuel used in maritime transport are significantly larger compared to road, rail, or air transport.
The course will also address the specific characteristics of fuel use in road and aviation sectors in comparison to maritime transport. The types of fuels introduced in this course include hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and, in an introductory form, nuclear fuel.
The theoretical part will cover the specific characteristics of the fuels, their usage, operating conditions, storage and transport, economic dimension, socio-economic aspects, exposure chain, and safety techniques.
