Õppeaine eesmärk on merealase inglise keele omandamine reakoosseisule vastavalt STCW-78, koos muudatustega vastavalt tabelile A-II/4 ja IMO mudelkursuse 3.17 nõuetele.

The aim of this course is to learn Maritime English for rating according to STCW-78 as amended table A-II/4 and IMO model course 3.17 requirements.

Õppeaine läbinud üliõpilane:
- rakendab IMO sidepidamise standard-väljendeid (SMCP);
- tutvustab oma laeva ja meeskonda ning suhtleb arusaadavalt paljurahvuselises meeskonnas;
- nimetab tööriistu, instrumente ja laevaosi inglise keeles;
- loetleb erinevaid lasti liike ja lastikäitlusega seonduvaid meeskonnaliikmete ülesandeid, kirjeldab lasti pildilisi märgistusi (piktogramme);
- loeb, tõlgib ja mõistab NAVTEX teadaandeid;
- tunneb ära meremärke, teab elementaarseid kokkupõrgete vältimise reegleid merel (COLREGs);
- koostab ja esitab ettekandeid, osaleb lihtsamates erialastes arutluses.

After completing this course the student:
- applies IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP);
- introduces their vessel and crew and communicates clearly in a multinational crew;
- names tools, instruments, and parts of the ship in English;
- lists different types of cargo and the tasks of crew members related to cargo handling, describes cargo pictorial markings;
- reads, translates, and understands NAVTEX messages;
- recognizes sea marks, knows the basic rules of collision avoidance at sea (COLREGs);
- prepares and gives presentations, participates in simple professional discussions.

Õppeaine sisu rõhutab erialaterminoloogia omandamist ja selle kasutamisoskust, keelestruktuuride ja suhtluspädevuste arendamist läbi kogu kursuse.
