To give general review of the development, actual state and perspectives of mechanical engineering; knowledge on design of structures and joints of machine elements; knowledge on motions of mechanisms, processes and forces in machines and sources of these forces; knowledge on machine design, selection and calculation of machine elements; an account on calculation and optimization of machines and structures using numerical methods.

Masinaelementide kursuse läbimise tulemusena üliõpilane (1) tunneb üldotstarbeliste masinaelementide alast terminoloogiat, süstemaatikat ja standardelementide andmebaase, ainevaldkonna põhimõisteid ja masinaelementide kasutusalasid, samuti masinaelementide materjalide ja pinnete valiku ning detailide dimensioneerimise üldmetodoloogiat; (2) mõistab masinaelementidele toimivate mõjurite poolt tekitatud füüsikalisi protsesse ning oskab rakendada meetmeid masinaelementide tõrgete vältimiseks; (3) oskab detaile praktiliselt mõõtmestada ja geomeetriliselt tolereerida ning koostada detaili tööjoonist.

After the course study a student (1) knows general-purpose machine elements terminology, systematics, the databases of standard elements, the fundamental concepts of the course and application fields of machine elements; in addition, selection of machine elements materials and coatings; general methods of dimensioning; U(2) understands the physical processes in machine elements that take place due to affection of external influencers and knows how to prevent machine elements failure;
(3) is able to dimension, specify geometric tolerances and make a detail drawing.

Product. Analysis of product structure. Kinematical schemes. Durability of machine elements. Fatigue failure. Influence of stress concentration on fatigue strength. Motions in machines. Engines. Tolerances and fits. Geometrical tolerances. Surface roughness. Joints of machine elements: rivets, welding, shrink fits, threaded fasteners, keys, pins, toothed joints, etc. Shafts and axles: design and optimization. Rolling-element bearings: design, selection and life requirement. Sliding bearings: design and lubrication. Mechanisms. Spur gears, helical, bevel and worm gears. Gear design and materials. Hindamine toimub kirjaliku eksamina. Semestri jooksul esitatakse kolm kodutööd, mille kogumaht annab kuni 30 punkti eksamihindest. Eksam koosneb teoreetilisest ja praktilisest osast. Teoreetiline osa annab 40 punkti ja praktiline 30 punkti.

Assessment by a written exam. Three home works required to be taken during the semester that gives maximum 30 points of exam grade. Exam consists of theoretical and practical parts. Theoretical part gives 40 points of exam grade and practical part gives 30 points.
