Õppeaine eesmärk on arendada üliõpilaste süsteemset ja kriitilist arusaama kaasaegsetest energiasüsteemidest ning kujundada võimekus analüüsida, hinnata ja kavandada energialahendusi, mis arvestavad tehnoloogilisi, keskkondlikke, majanduslikke ja poliitilisi tegureid. Aine toetab magistritasemel otsustus- ja argumenteerimisoskuste arengut jätkusuutliku energiamajanduse kontekstis.

The course aims to develop students' systematic and critical understanding of modern energy systems and to develop the ability to analyze, evaluate, and design energy solutions that take into account technological, environmental, economic, and political factors. The subject supports the development of decision-making and argumentation skills at the master's level in the context of a sustainable energy economy.

Aine läbinud üliõpilane:
- analüüsib energiasüsteemide toimimist, sidudes energiaallikad, muundamis- ja salvestustehnoloogiad ning tarbimismustrid süsteemseks tervikuks;
- hindab kriitiliselt erinevate energiatehnoloogiate ja -ressursside keskkonna-, sotsiaal-majanduslikke ja kliimamõjusid, kasutades asjakohaseid hindamismeetodeid ja teadusallikaid;
- võrdleb ja põhjendab taastuvate ja taastumatute energiaressursside rakendatavust erinevates regionaalsetes ja poliitilistes kontekstides, arvestades ressursside kättesaadavust ja süsteemipiiranguid;
- analüüsib energiapoliitika ja regulatsioonide rolli energiasüsteemide kujundamisel, seostades poliitikavalikuid tehnoloogiliste ja keskkondlike tulemustega;
- kavandab energiasüsteemide arendamise või ümberkujundamise stsenaariume, lähtudes jätkusuutlikkuse põhimõtetest ja süsteemianalüüsist.

A student who has completed the course:
- analyzes the functioning of energy systems, linking energy sources, conversion and storage technologies, and consumption patterns into a systemic whole;
- critically evaluates the environmental, socio-economic, and climate impacts of different energy technologies and resources, using appropriate assessment methods and scientific sources;
- compares and justifies the applicability of renewable and non-renewable energy resources in different regional and political contexts, taking into account resource availability and system constraints;
- analyzes the role of energy policy and regulations in shaping energy systems and relates policy choices to technological and environmental outcomes;
- plans scenarios for the development or transformation of energy systems, based on the principles of sustainability and system analysis.

Õppeaine käsitleb energiasüsteemide teoreetilisi aluseid ja ajaloolist arengut ning energiaressursside klassifikatsiooni ja kättesaadavust erinevates regionaalsetes kontekstides. Keskendutakse energia muundamise ja salvestamise tehnoloogiatele, sealhulgas vesinikule, akulahendustele ja soojussalvestusele, samuti elektri- ja energiasüsteemide stabiilsuse ja paindlikkuse tagamisele. Aines analüüsitakse energia tootmise ja tarbimise keskkonnamõjusid, kasutades elutsükli hindamise (LCA) j lähenemist, ning käsitletakse taastuvenergia integreerimisega seotud süsteemseid väljakutseid. Tähelepanu pööratakse energiapoliitika, regulatsioonide ja turumudelite rollile energiasüsteemide kujundamisel ning riiklike ja regionaalsete energiasüsteemide võrdlevale analüüsile. Kursus lõpeb tulevikustsenaariumide ja energiasiirde strateegiate käsitlemisega, rõhutades jätkusuutlike ja tõenduspõhiste lahenduste kavandamist
brief description of the course in English
The course covers the theoretical foundations and historical development of energy systems, as well as the classification and availability of energy resources in different regional contexts. The focus is on energy conversion and storage technologies, including hydrogen, battery solutions, and thermal storage, as well as ensuring the stability and flexibility of electricity and energy systems. The course analyses the environmental impacts of energy production and consumption using a life cycle assessment (LCA) approach, and addresses the systemic challenges associated with the integration of renewable energy. Attention is paid to the role of energy policy, regulations, and market models in the design of energy systems, and to a comparative analysis of national and regional energy systems. The course concludes with a discussion of future scenarios and energy transition strategies, emphasizing the design of sustainable and evidence-based solutions.
