Aine eesmärk on:
- anda üliõpilastele põhjalik arusaamine andmete edastamise põhiprintsiipidest ja meetoditest;
- tutvustada õpilastele teoreetilisi aluseid ja praktilisi oskusi seoses sidevõrkude ning andmeedastustehnoloogiatega;
- arendada üliõpilaste kriitilist mõtlemist ja analüüsivõimet andmeedastuse valdkonnas;
- valmistada ette üliõpilased tööturul edukalt tegutsemiseks side- ja võrguinseneride, infotehnoloogide ning andmeside spetsialistidena.

The aim of this course is to:
- provide students with a thorough understanding of the basic principles and methods of data transmission;
- introduce students to theoretical foundations and practical skills related to communication networks and data transmission technologies;
- develop students' critical thinking and analytical ability in the field of data transmission;
- prepare students for successful operation in the labor market as communication and network engineers, information technologists and data communication specialists.

Õppeaine läbinud üliõpilane:
- selgitab andmeedastuse valdkonna põhimõisteid;
- mõistab signaalide olemust, nende parameetreid ja signaaliteooria põhimõtteid;
- kirjeldab erinevaid sidekeskkondi, nende eeliseid ja puudusi ning valib sobivad edastusmeediumid vastavalt konkreetsetele vajadustele;
- hindab erinevaid andmeedastuse tehnikaid, sh kodeerimismeetodeid ja digitaaltehnoloogiaid;
- rakendab teadmisi mobiilside valdkonnas, sh eri põlvkondade mobiilsidevõrkude mõistmiseks ja planeerimiseks;
- analüüsib andmeedastuse valdkonna majanduslikke ja tehnilisi aspekte, et kavandada, ehitada ja hooldada tõhusaid sidevõrke.

After completing this course, the student:
- explains basic concepts in the field of data Communication;
- understands the nature of signals, their parameters and principles of signal theory;
- described different communication media, their advantages and disadvantages, and selects suitable transmission media according to specific needs;
- evaluates various data transmission techniques, including encoding methods and digital technologies;
- applies knowledge in the field of mobile communications, including understanding and planning for different generations of mobile networks;
- analyzes the economic and technical aspects of the field of data transmission in order to design, build and maintain efficient communication networks.

Kommunikatsiooni põhimõisted, signaalid ja sõnumid. Sidesüsteemide liigitus, põhisõlmed, parameetrid ja piirangud. Kõne- ja pildiedastuse meetodid ja seadmed. Infokanalite tihendamine. Sumbuvuse ja mürade mõju arvestamine. Andmete kokkusurumine. Telefoni- ja andmeside kommutaatorid. Kommutatsiooni haldamine ja andmekaitse. Arvutivõrkude arhitektuurid ja protokollid. Kohtvõrkude topoloogiad ja transmissioonseadmed. Koormusejaotus ja marsruutimine. Integreeritud sidevõrkude ülesehitus. Teenindusteooria sidesüsteemides ja süsteemi majandusnäitajad. Sidestandardid ja süsteemide ning seadmete kasutuspiirangud. Kommunikatsioonisüsteemi teenused, teenuste kvaliteedi tagamine. Mobiil- ja personaalkommunikatsioon.

Basic terminology in telecommunications. Signals and messages. Classification of telecommunications systems, main units, parameters and limitations. Methods and equipment of voice and image transmission. Multiplexing in information transmission channel. Exchanges in telephone and data networks. Switching management and data security. Architectures and protocols of computer networks. Topologies of local area networks and transmission equipment. Load distribution and routing. Structure of integrated telecommunications networks. Economic characteristics of a telecommunications system. Standardization in telecommunications; limitations on the application of systems and equipment. Telecommunication services, quality of services. Mobile and personal telecommunications.
