Aine eesmärk on anda üldteadmised okeanograafias ja limnoloogias; ookeanide, merede ja suurjärvede uurimise ajaloost, ülesannetest ja meetoditest; peamistest veekogudes toimuvatest füüsikalistest protsessidest ja veekogude ökoloogiast.

The aim of this course is to give basic knowledge in oceanography and limnology; history, tasks and methods of research of oceans, seas and lakes; main physical processes in waterbodies and aquatic ecology.

- on omandanud põhiteadmised okeanograafiast ja limnoloogiast;
- tunneb veekogudes aset leidvaid füüsikalisi protsesse ja veekogude ökoloogiat;

Okeanograafia ja limnoloogia aine. Vee ringkäik looduses, viibeaeg. Ookeanid, mered ja järved, nende geomorfoloogilised omadused. Veekogude uurimismeetodid. Veekogude seisundit iseloomustavad muutujad ja nende mõõtmise vahendid. Merevee soolsus, ookeanide veemassid. Andmete töötlemise ja esitamise meetodid. Veekogude kaugseire. Veekogude modelleerimise põhimõtted. Ülevaade veekogudes toimuvatest füüsikalistest protsessidest, peamised liikumapanevad jõud ja bilansid, statsionaarsed hoovused, ookeanikonveier, muutlikkuse mastaabid, tõus-mõõn, lainetus, tsirkulatsioon estuaarides ja järvedes. Ülevaade veekogude ökoloogiast, elustik, aineringed. Okeanograafia ja limnoloogia praktilised ülesanded ja rakendused.

Subject of oceanography and limnology. Natural water cycle, residence time. World ocean, seas and lakes, their geomorphology. Research methods. Main variables, measurement methods and equipment. Data processing and presentation methods. Remote sensing of waterbodies. Principles of modelling of waterbodies. Overview of physical processes in the waterbodies, main governing forces and balances, stationary currents, ocean conveyer, variability and scales, tides, waves, circulation in estuaries and lakes. Overview of aquatic ecology, organisms and nutrient cycles. Applied problems and applications of oceanography and limnology.
