Kursuse eesmärgiks on süvendada teadmisi rahvusvahelise majanduse olulistes teemades: rahvusvaheliste finantsturgude, vahetuskursside, rahaliitude olemus ja funktsioneerimine, finantskriisid. Kursusel käsitletakse nii teoreetilisi kontseptsioone kui praktilisi probleeme.

The course aims to familiarise the students with key topics within international economics, such as the purpose and functioning of international financial markets, exchange rate systems, monetary unions and financial crises. Both theoretical foundations and contemporary policy issues are discussed.

Rahvusvahelised finantsturud kui resursside perioodide- ja seisundite vahelised allokatsioonivahendid ("kindlustus"). Globaliseerimine ja selle tagajärjed. Hinnad ja intressimääradkaupade ja finantsvoogude vaba liikumise tingimustes. Majanduspoliitika fikseeritud ja vahetuskursi tingimustes. Rahaliidu kasu ja kulu. Euroopa raha- ja majandusliit, Maastrichti kriteeriumid ja euro. Vahetuskursi kriiside teooriad. Finantskriiside ajalooline kontekst.

International financial markets as a means of resource allocation across periods and states of nature ("insurance"). Globalisation and its consequences. Prices and interest rates under free international trade and financial flows. Economic policy under fixed and floating exchange rates. The benefits and costs of monetary unions. The European Monetary and Economic Union, the Maastricht criteria and the euro. Theories of exchange rate crises. Financial crises in historical context.
