VERSION SPECIFIC DATA
course aims in Estonian
course aims in English
The aim of this course to give the student a detailed understanding of muscle and cardiac physiology. It will start at a basic level assuming little prior knowledge by the students. The course will focus on muscle and cardiac physiology, but the basic principles of energetics, structure, ion-balance and signaling will also be discussed in relation to other tissues.
learning outcomes in the course in Est.
Õppeaine läbinud üliõpilane:
- kirjeldab lihasrakkude struktuurseid komponente;
- selgitab, kuidas lihased kokku tõmbuvad;
- kirjeldab erinevate lihaste funktsionaalseid ja metaboolseid strateeriaid;
- kirjeldab, kuidas reguleeritakse lihaste jõudlust.
learning outcomes in the course in Eng.
After completing this course, the student:
- describes the structural components in muscle cells;
- explains how muscles contract;
- outlines the functional and metabolic strategies of different muscles;
- describes how muscle performance is regulated.
brief description of the course in Estonian
Kursus koosneb loengutest, teoreetilistest harjutustest ja praktilistest harjutustest. Loengutes käsitletakse õpiku peatükke ja lisamaterjale. Teoreetiliste harjutuste käigus läbime mõned väikesed harjutused, et korrata loengute materjale. Lisaks käsitleme enne iga praktikat praktiliste harjutuste teooriat ja pärast iga praktikat tutvume tulemustega.
Seal on kolm praktikat:
brief description of the course in English
The course consists of lectures, theoretical exercises, and practical exercises. The lectures will cover the chapters in the textbook and additional materials. During the theoretical exercises, we will go through some small exercises to repeat the materials from the lectures. In addition, before each practical, we will cover the theory for the practical exercises, and after each practical, we will go through the results.
There will be three laboratory exercises
- Dissection and preparation of muscle homogenates followed by recording of marker enzymes in different muscle samples.
- Isolation of cardiomyocytes; using microscopy to observe calcium transients during cardiomyocyte contraction and how it changes with adrenergic stimulation
- Observing the work of an isolated working heart
After each practical, the student must prepare a small report, and the students will take turns to make an oral presentation of the results of their laboratory work.
