Aine eesmärk on õpetada:
- keemiliste molekulide kolmemõõtmelisusest tingitud omadusi, ruumiliste molekulide struktuuri ja omaduste seoseid;
- iseseisvalt ära tundma ja iseloomustama käelisi molekule ning selgitada ruumilise struktuuri olulisust ainete bioloogilistele omadustele.

The aim of this course is to:
- teach the properties of the compounds that depend on the three dimensional structure of the molecules, to open the relationship between spatial structure and properties of the compound;
- teach to recognize independently chiral molecules and to characterize them and to emphasize importance of the spatial structure of the compound on its biological activity.

Õppeaine läbinud üliõpilane:
- defineerib stereokeemia baasmõisteid ja kirjeldab meetodeid;
- tunneb ära kiraalseid struktuure ja määrab enantiomeersete molekulide absoluutset konfiguratsiooni eri deskriptoritega (näiteks R/S, P/M jne);
- määrab suhkrute anomeere ja joonistab suhkruid eri projektsioonides;
- arutleb enantiomeerselt rikastatud ainete optiliste omaduste üle ja eristab meetodeid optilise ning enantiomeerse puhtuse määramiseks;
- kirjeldab mõnede tähtsamate stereospetsiifiliste ja stereoselektiivsete reaktsioonide karakteristikuid.

After completing this course, the student:
- defines the basics of stereochemistry;
- recognizes chiral structures and determines the absolute configuration of the compound with different descriptors (i.e R/S, P/M etc.);
- determines different anomers of sugars and draws the structure in different projections;
- discusses about the properties related to optical attributes and differentiantes between methods to determine optical and enantiomerical purity;
- describes stereochemical characteristics of some important stereospecific and stereoselective reactions.

Stereokeemia põhimõisted: molekulide sümmeetria ja kiraalsus. Staatiline stereokeemia. Absoluutne ja suhteline konfiguratsioon ja selle esitamine. Enantiomeersete ainete optilised omadused ja enantiomeerse puhtuse kirjeldamine ja määramine. Keemiliste reaktsioonide stereokeemilised seaduspärasused.

Basics of stereochemistry: symmetry and chirality of the molecules. Static stereochemistry. Absolute and relative configuration and its presentation. Properties of enantiomerically enriched compounds, characterization and determination of optical and enantiomeric purity. Sterochemical features of some stereospecific and stereoselective reactions.
