learning outcomes in the course in Eng.
After completing this course, the student:
- has acquired theoretical knowledge on synthetic biology applications and ethical issues related to the field;
- uses metabolic models to design cell factories;
- designs and constructs eukaryotic cell factories using synthetic biology tools;
- independently plans his/her work in the construction of microorganisms and in the characterization of new strains.
brief description of the course in Estonian
brief description of the course in English
The course provides a theoretical overview of the nature, history and applications of synthetic biology, as well as practical experience in cell design and engineering. The course focuses on the use of modern synthetic biology tools in the construction of cell factories based on eukaryotic organisms (yeast) e.g. food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Throughout this course, the design, construction, testing, and learning cycle of a bioprocess engineer is followed. The various possibilities of anaerobic and aerobic production of biological compounds (metabolites, proteins, polymers, etc.) are discussed, and the main producer organisms and the technologies underlying their use and exploitation are introduced. The prospects for synthetic biology and related ethical issues are also discussed.
