VERSION SPECIFIC DATA
course aims in Estonian
course aims in English
The aim of the course is to give a brief overview of the molecular biology of eukaryotic model organisms focusing on Drosophila menalnogaster and yeasts and to introduce the basic practical skills and methodology.
The course covers systematics of fungi, the use of genetic nomenclature, genetics of yeasts as model organisms and their use in biotechnology. An overview of the use of Drosophila in the laboratory, its growth and genetics and the most important tools is provided (including Databases).
learning outcomes in the course in Est.
Aine läbinud üliõpilane:
- tunneb kursuse raames käsitletud mudelorganismide iseärasusi;
- selgitab ja võrdleb nende elutsüklit ja rakutsüklit;
- tunneb peamisi kasutusel olevaid uurimismeetodeid ning saab aru nende meetodite tööpõhimõttest;
- kasutab korrektselt geneetilist nomenklatuuri;
- kasutab iseseisvalt mudelorganismide andmebaase, tõlgendab kriitiliselt ja loovalt sealt saadud informatsiooni.
learning outcomes in the course in Eng.
After the course, the student will:
- know the characteristics of the model organisms covered in the course;
- analyse and compare their the life cycle and cell cycle;
- gain knowledge in the field of various genetics methods and their working principles;
- be able to use the genetic nomenclature correctly;
- use the genetic databases of the model organisms without assistance, be able to critically interpret the collected information.
