Students understand the basic ethical and legal aspects in biotechnology and on business issues of gene technology. Students are able to use this knowledge in practice. Students have acquired the skills to read and understand scientific articles and to compose presentations based on these articles.

Geenitehnoloogia seadusandlus ja geenitehnoloogia eetika. Inimese geneetiliste uurimiste eetika ja Eesti Geenivaramu. Geenitehnoloogiaalase töö reguleerimine Eestis. Geenitehnoloogia ohtlikkus. GMO taimede ohtlikkus ja tähtsamate GMO taimede ohtlikkuse näited. GMO riis, puuvill ja mais. Patendid ja nende taotlemine. Litsensid, litsensilepingud ja litsentsitasud. Kuidas ja mida patenteerida biotehnoloogias ja geenitehnoloogias. Biotehnoloogiliste patentide eripära. Kuidas organiseerida geeni- ja biotehnoloogia firmat. Avastustest tooteni – inimese kasvuhormooni, insuliini ja erütropoetiini näited. Avastusest oma firma loomiseni – case-analüüs. Eri võimaluste analüüs avastuste juurutamisel geenitehnoloogias.

Legislation of gene technology and ethics in gene technology. Ethics in human genetic research and Estonian Genome Foundation. Regulations applying to gene technology in Estonia. Risk assessment in gene technology. Environmental anf health risk of GMO plants, examples on the risk assessment of the most commonly used GMO plants. GMO rice, cotton and maize. Patents and patent applications. Licences, licence agreements and royalties. What and how should be patented in biotechnology and gene technology. Special features of biotechnological patents. How is a gene technology or biotechnology company established and administrated. From discoveries to a product – human growth hormone, insulin, eryhtropoietin. From discovery to creating a company – case analysis. Analysis of different possibilities in implementation of gene technology discoveries.
