Tutvumine levinumate geenitehnoloogia teaduslike probleemidega ja laboris kasutatavate meetoditega (nende põhimõtted, kasutusvõimalused, probleemid). Ülevaade põhilistest mudelorganismidest ja nendega seotud tehnikatest.
Paralleelselt on aine eesmärgiks õppida lugema ja mõistma teaduslikke artikleid ning saadud teadmisi teistele arusaadavas vormis ette kandma.

Get to know the main current scientific problems and methods used in the labs (their principles, possible areas of use, problems). Overview about main model organisms and methods how they are used in research.
In parallel, the aim of the course ist o learn how to read and understand scientific articles and present them to others.

The student understands the basics of molecular biology methods and model organisms and is able to use them in his/her research. The student is able to read and understand the content of scientific articles and make presentations based on these.

Konkreetsete küsimuste ja olukorrakirjelduste arutelude kaudu puudutatakse olulisi probleeme DNA, kromosoomide ja geenide üldises struktuuris, replikatsioonis, transkriptsioonis ja translatsioonis, DNA, RNA ja valkudega tehtavates manipulatsioonides, jne. Ettekande pidamine ühest teaduslikust artiklist ning ühe analoogse ettekande retsenseerimine žurnaaliklubi raames.
brief description of the course in English
By using concrete questions and descriptions of lab problems important topics related to DNA, chromosomes and structure of genes, replication, transcription and translation, how to make experiments with DNA, RNA and proteins will be discussed. One presentation should be performed in the journal club as well as another presentation should be reviewed.
