VERSION SPECIFIC DATA
course aims in Estonian
course aims in English
The aim of this course is to give an overview of geological structure of Estonia and its development through time, and practical skills about the rocks, sediments and mineral resources of the country.
learning outcomes in the course in Est.
Kursuse läbinud üliõpilane:
- selgitab Eesti geoloogilist ehitust ja teab selle kujunemise põhietappe;
- kirjeldab Eestis levinud tard- ja moondekivimeid, settekivimeid ning setete tüüpe, nende omadusi ja stratigraafilist liigestust;
- on kursis Eesti maavaradega, teab nende geoloogilist paiknemist ning kasutamise ja kaevandamise viise, tunneb Eesti geoloogilisi riske;
- on omandanud esmased välitöö meetodid, oskab lugeda geoloogilist kaarti ning leida ja kasutada informatsiooni maapõue-alastest andmekogudest.
learning outcomes in the course in Eng.
After completing the course student:
- understands the position and main geological structures of Estonia and its neighbourhoods; knows the geological history of the region;
- knows igneous-, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks as well as soft sediments, their main properties and stratigraphy in Estonia;
- is aware of country's mineral resources and their utilization, as well as environmental issues and potential geological hazards in Estonia;
- has obtained basic fieldwork skills, can read geological map and use Estonian geological databases.
brief description of the course in Estonian
Eesti geoloogiline asend ja ehituse põhijooned. Aluskord.
brief description of the course in English
Position of Estonia and main geological structures and features in Estonia and neighbouring regions. The basement: igneous and metamorphic rocks, their age, formation and occurrence in subsurface; basement rocks in drill cores and by the example of glacial erratic boulders. Sedimentary cover: main complexes of sedimentary rocks, their age, formation, distribution, outcrop areas, main properties and practical importance; learning Ediacaran rocks in drill cores; visiting outcrops of Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian and Devonian rocks across the country; getting familiar with subsurface rocks using drill cores. Palaeozoic fossils. Quaternary cover in Estonia: glacial deposits, Baltic sea and lake deposits, bogs, formation of the main types of landforms; Quaternary mineral resources. The course will take place as fieldwork guided by the staff of Tallinn University of Technology.
