brief description of the course in Estonian
Mineraalid ja kivimid kui maakoore ehitusplokid. Kristallograafia põhitõed. Mineraalid ja nende omadused: keemiline koostis, kristallivormid, kõvadus, värvus, läige jne ning nende määramine. Süstemaatiline mineraloogia, mineraalid klassid: ehedad elemendid, sulfiidid, haliidid, oksiidid, karbonaadid, boraadid, sulfaadid, fosfaadid, silikaadid, orgaanilised mineraalid; iga klassi esindajad, nende omadused, tekketingimused ja esinemine. Kivimitmoodustavad ja aktsessoorsed mineraalid, maakmineraalid, vääriskivid. Tardkivimite petrograafia: põhiprintsiibid, klassifikatsioonid, tekkemehhanismid, Boweni rida, süvakivimid ja vulkaanilised kivimid. Setted ja settekivimid: setete tekkimine, transport ja settimine, setete litifitseerumine ja diagenees; setete ja settekivimite klassifikatsioonid. Purdkivimid, biogeensed ja kemogeensed kivimid, nende koostis ja omadused, levik ajas ja ruumis. Moondeprotsessid ja moondekivmid. Maapõue materjalide kasutamine: metallimaagid, tööstustoormed, ehitustoormed, põlevmaavarad. Mineraalide ja kivimite praktiline määramine: optiline mikroskoopia, röntgendiffraktomeetria, keemiline analüüs.
brief description of the course in English
Minerals and rocks as building blocks of Earth crust. Main concepts of crystallography. Properties of minerals: chemical composition, crystal form, color, hardness, density, luster, diaphaneity, fracture, streak, etc. Systematic mineralogy, main mineral classes: native elements, sulfides, halides, oxides, carbonates, borates, sulphates, phosphates, silicates and organic minerals; most common representatives of each class, their properties, formation and occurrences. Rock-forming minerals, accessory minerals, main ore minerals, gemstones. Igneous petrography: main principles, classifications, Bowen's reaction series, intrusive and extrusive rocks. Sedimentary petrology: types of sediments and sedimentary environments; lithification and diagenesis; classification and distribution of sedimentary rocks in time and space. Clastic, biogenic and chemogenic sedimentary rocks, their composition and properties. Metamorphic petrography: metamorphic facies and their occurrences, indicator minerals. Usage of Earth materials: metal ores, industrial minerals, construction materials, hydrocarbons.
