​​Õppeaine eesmärgiks on luua baasteadmised ioniseeriva kiirguse füüsikast ja kiirguskaitsest. Tutvutakse erinevate ioniseeriva kiirguse liikide, nende tekkimise ja allikatega. Õpitakse, kuidas ioniseeriva kiirguse energia kandub erinevates vastasmõju protsessides üle ainele ja kuidas on nende protsesside esinemine seotud ioniseeriva kiirguse ja aine parameetritega. Õpitakse ioniseeriva kiirguse poolt ainele üleantavat energiat kirjeldama erinevate suuruste ja ühikute abil. Õpitakse tundma kiirgusohutuse põhimõtteid ja seotud osapoolte rolle ning vastutusalasid erinevates valdkondades: elanike kiiritus, kutsekiiritus, meditsiinikiiritus. Seotakse ioniseeriva kiirguse füüsika teadmised kiirguskaitse meetmete rakendamisega.
course aims in English
The aim of this course is to provide fundamental knowledge of the physics of ionizing radiation and radiation protection. The course introduces different types of ionizing radiation, their origin, and sources. Students learn how the energy of ionizing radiation is transferred to matter through various interaction processes and how the occurrence of these processes depends on the parameters of the radiation and the material. The course also covers the description of energy transferred to matter by ionizing radiation using different physical quantities and units. Furthermore, students become familiar with the principles of radiation safety and the roles and responsibilities of the relevant stakeholders in different exposure situations, including public exposure, occupational exposure, and medical exposure. The knowledge of ionizing radiation physics is linked to the practical implementation of radiation protection measures.

Õppeaine läbinud üliõpilane:
- kirjeldab erinevate kiirguse liikide ja ainete korral energia ülekannet ainele, arvestades ioniseeriva kiirguse ja aine vastasmõju protsesse;
- rakendab ioniseeriva kiirguse poolt ainele üleantava energia kirjeldamiseks kasutatavaid suuruseid ja ühikuid ülesannete lahedamisel;
- kasutab teadmisi ioniseeriva kiirguse füüsikast kiirguskaitse meetmete rakendamisel;
- analüüsib kiirguskaitsemeetmete rakendamise vajalikkust erinevates olukordades, erinevate ioniseeriva kiirguse liikide ja parameetrite ning keskkonnast sõltuvate tegurite puhul.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student:
- describes the transfer of energy to matter for different types of radiation and materials, taking into account the interaction processes between ionizing radiation and matter.
- applies the physical quantities and units used to describe the energy transferred to matter by ionizing radiation when solving problems;
- uses knowledge of ionizing radiation physics in the implementation of radiation protection measures; - analyzes the necessity of applying radiation protection measures in different situations, taking into account various types and parameters of ionizing radiation as well as environment-dependent factors.

Õppeaine annab ülevaate ioniseeriva kiirguse füüsikalisest olemusest, tekkest ja liikidest ning tuumafüüsika põhialustest. Käsitletakse ioniseeriva kiirguse ja aine vastasmõju protsesse, sealhulgas footonite ja elektronide interaktsioone, energia ülekannet ainele ning dosimeetria põhimõtteid.
Õppeaines tutvustatakse kiirguskaitse aluseid, kiiritusolukordi, doosi piirmäärasid ning kiirguskaitse meetmete rakendamist tervishoius ja muudes valdkondades. Samuti käsitletakse kiirgusohutuse korraldust, rollijaotust ja vastutust, meditsiinikiirituse eripärasid ning kiirgusvarjestuse hindamise põhimõtteid.

The course provides an overview of the physical nature, origin, and types of ionizing radiation, as well as the fundamentals of nuclear physics. It addresses the interaction of ionizing radiation with matter, including photon and electron interactions, energy transfer to matter, and the principles of dosimetry.
The course also introduces the fundamentals of radiation protection, exposure situations, dose limits, and the implementation of radiation protection measures in healthcare and other fields. In addition, it covers radiation safety organization, roles and responsibilities, specific aspects of medical exposure, and the principles of radiation shielding assessment.
