Kursuse eesmärk on tutvustada elektromagnetlainete praktilist kasutamist andmeedastuseks. Vaadeldakse EM lainete levi suunavates süsteemides ja vabas ruumis.

The aim of this course is to teach practical applications of electromagnetic waves for data transmission, and introduce EM waves and their behaviour both in guided media and in free space.

Kursuse läbinud üliõpilane:
- mõistab lainejuhtide üldist tööpõhimõtet, teab nende põhiparameetreid ja oskab lainejuhte lihtsamates rakendustes kasutada;
- mõistab antenni tööpõhimõtet, teab põhilisi parameetreid ja oskab neid mõõta;
- mõistab raadiolainete levi reaalses keskkonnas ja oskab lahendada sellega seotud lihtsamaid ülesandeid.

Having finished the study of the subject a student has to be able to understand:
- behaviour and basic parameters of transmission lines and waveguides;
- working principle of antenna and know antenna parameters and how to measure them;
- radio wave propagation in free space and in real environment.

Elektromagnetvälja baasvõrrandid. Lained suunavates süsteemides, telegraafi võrrandid. Ülekandeliinide omadused, impedantsi sobitamine. Ülekandeliinide ja lainejuhtide tüübid, dispersioon lainejuhtides. Dielektrilised lainejuhid, fiiberoptika, mono- ja multimodaalsed kiud, gradientkiud.
Antennide tüübid, kiirgamise protsess. Antennide põhiparameetrid ja nende mõõtmine. Levikanali mudel, lainete levi vabas ruumis. Lainelevi linnakeskkonnas ja hoonetes. Tropos- ja ionosfääriside, lainete hajumine, peegeldumine ja murdumine. Satelliitside, radioreleeliin, mikrolained ja optiline kiirgus atmosfääris, sademete mõju levile. Mitmekiireline levi ja feedingud.

Basic equations of electromagnetic waves. Waves in guided media, telegraph equations. Characteristics of transmission lines, impedance matching. Types of transmission lines and waveguides, dispersion in transmission lines. Dielectric transmission lines, fiber-optical lines - mono- and multimode fibers.
Types of antennas. Radiation process. Basic parameters of antennas and antenna measurements. Model of a propagation channel. Propagation in a free space. Propagation in an urban environment and in buildings. Tropospheric refraction and spreading. Refraction and reflection of waves in ionosphere. Satellite communications. Radio link. Propagation of microwaves and optical radiation in the troposphere. Effect of precipitation on propagation, fading, dispersion.

Teadmiste kontroll toimub eksamil. Üliõpilane peab eksamile pääsemiseks olema sooritanud 4 laboritööd ja harjutusülesanded ja arutanud laboritulemused läbi juhendava laboriõppejõuga. Eksamil kontrollitakse üliõpilase teoreetilisi teadmisi faktide tõestusi, mõistete definitsioone ja vaadeldavate antenni lahenduste omadusi. Samuti tuleb eksamil lahendada ülesandeid. Eksamihinne kujuneb eksamiküsimuste vastustega saadud punktide alusel.
type of assessment in English
The control of knowledges takes place in examinations at the end of a term. For the getting a permission to an examination it is necessary to solve laboratory works (4 labs and excercises). Lab works and results approvals are carried out by an assistant. In examination the following knowledges are checked: proofs of facts, the main notions and the main properties of considerable antenna systems components and objects. Also is necessary to solve some problems. The final grade of the course will be computed as a weighted mean of the tests and the exam.

Iseseisev töö seisneb teoreetiliste materjalide läbitöötamises ja kodutööde täitmises. Töö maht statsionaarses õppes – 75 tundi.

The self-dependent work of students consists in the learning of the theoretical material of the subject and in the solving home-problems. Learning capacities of the subject in the stationary learning is 75 hours.
