Kursuse sooritanud üliõpilane oskab:
- rakendada meetodeid sidevõrkude töökindluse ja turvalisuse tagamiseks
- kasutada juhtme- ja raadiopõhise Etherneti lahendusi ja protokolle
- ühendada sideterminale võrgusõlmega ja võrgusõlmi teiste sidevõrkudega ning selgitada loodud sidesüsteemi toimimist
- valida mobiilsete sidevõrkude pöördus tehnoloogiaid ja hinnata, millised tegurid mõjutavad ühenduse kvaliteeti;
- monitoorida andmevooge võrgumudelite eri kihtides, sh multimeedia (heli, pilt, video).

After having successfully passed the course a student:
- applies appropriate methods in order to secure reliability and security of communication networks;
- utilises wired and wireless Ethernet solutions and protocols;
- interconnect terminals and network nodes as well as different nodes in a network, explains the operation of the communication system created;
- selects mobile access technologies and evaluates factors that have impact on connection quality;
- monitors different data streams on different layers of the networks (incl. sound, images, video).

Kommunikatsiooni põhimõisted, sõnumiedastus ning signaalide ülekanne. Sidesüsteemide liigitus, põhisõlmed. Mudelite kasutamine sidesüsteemide kirjeldamisel. Shannoni– Weaver’i mudel. ISO-OSI mudel. ARPA mudel (TCP/IP).
Allika kooder, kanali kooder, modulaator, füüsikaline sidekanal. Signaalid ja spektrid. Digitaalsignaalid ja nende ülekanne sidekanalis. Erinevad ülekandemeediumid ja nende abil pakutavad lahendused. Ressursijaotus sidekanalis, kanalite tihendamismeetodid. Voo- ja veahaldus, adresseerimine ja aadressiruumi haldamine. IP-võrkude ülesehitus, võrgusõlmede põhiparameetrid ja kasutuspiirangud, pakettvõrgu monitoorimine ja diagnostika. Kõrgjõudlusega tarkvarapõhised tuumvõrgud. Mobiilsed juurdepääsuvõrgud: WCDMA, OFDMA, LTE. Traadita side. Sidevõrkude turvalisuse ja töökindluse tagamine. Kommunikatsiooniteenuste majanduspiirangud.
brief description of the course in English
Main concepts of telecommunication, transmitting messages and signals. Telecommunication systems, classification and main elements. Models for describing communication systems (incl. Shannon-Weaver, ISO-OSI, ARPA model). Source coding, channel coding, modulator, physical communication channel. Signals and spectrums. Digital signals, transmission of digital signals in communication channel. Different transmission media and solutions provided on their basis. Resource distribution in a communication channel, compression methods. Stream and error management, addresses and management of address space. Structure of IP networks., main parameters and limitations of network nodes. Software-based core networks with high throughput. Mobile access networks: WCDMA, OFDMA, LTE. Wireless communication. Security and reliability of telecommunication networks. Economical limitations of communications services.
