Kursuse eesmärk on anda sissejuhatus informaatikasse ning arvutitesse, kattes laia valiku teemasid: riistvara, tarkvara, elektroonika, ajalugu, standardid ning anda piisav ettevalmistus süvitsi õpinguteks. Kursus sisendab üliõpilastesse probleemilahendaja mentaliteeti mis on vajalik edukaks IT karjääriks.

Course objective is to provide introduction to informatics and computers, covering wide range of computing topics such as hardware, software, electronics, logic, history, standards and to prepare students to continue their studies in depth. The course builds problem-solving mental set that is necessary for successful IT career.

Kursuse lõpuks:
- üliõpilasel on arusaam arvuti komponentidest: emaplaat, protsessor, erinevad mälutüübid, kõvakettad, välkmälu, siinid;
- üliõpilane saab hakkama Boole valemitega, üliõpilane oskab moodustada digitaalseid komponente;
- üliõpilane on kursis integraalskeemidega, VHDL-i ning mikroskeemide tootmisprotsessiga;
- üliõpilasel on arusaam tarkvaralitsentsidest ning standarditest;
- üliõpilane oskab seostada ajaloolisi sündmusi ja tänapäeva;
- üliõpilane on tuttav alglaaduri, partitsioonitabeli, failisüsteemi mõistetega ning vähemalt ühe alternatiivse operatsioonisüsteemiga;
- üliõpilane oskab kasutada internetiotsinguid ning andmebaase;
- üliõpilane on tuttav andmete kodeerimisega, kaasa arvatud erinevad pildi-, heli- ning videovormingud ning oskab neid töödelda;
- üliõpilane on tuttav kontoritarkvara ja koostöökeskkondadega, sh tekstitöötlus-, tabelarvutus- ja esitlustarkvara.

By the end of the course, student:
- has an understanding of computer components - motherboard, processor, various memory types, hard drives, flash memory, drives;
- can handle Boolean formulas, students can form digital components;
- is familiar with integrated circuits, VHDL and microcircuit manufacturing process;
- has an understanding of software licenses and standards;
- can associate historical events and modern times;
- is familiar with the concepts of the boot loader, partition table, file system, and at least with an alternative operating system;
- can use Internet searches and databases;
- is familiar with data encoding, including various image, sound and video formats and can process them;
- is familiar with office software and collaborative environments, including word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software.

Arvuti komponendid – protsessor, mälu, kettad. Digitaalloogika alused, selle rakendamine kiipides ja mikroprotsessorites. Süsteemne ja rakendustarkvara, tarkvaralitsentsid ja standardid. Alglaadur, partitsioonitabel ja failisüsteem. Internet, teabe esitusstandardid selles, otsingud. Andmete kodeerimine, teksti- pildi- , heli- ja videovormingus ja mitmetes erivormingutes andmed.
