VERSION SPECIFIC DATA
course aims in Estonian
course aims in English
The aim of the course is to develop a systematic understanding of electrical, electrochemical, thermal and chemical energy storage options and Power-to-X technologies in energy and industrial systems. The course develops the ability to compare, size and evaluate storage and conversion solutions, taking into account technical performance, system integration, economic feasibility, reliability, safety and environmental impacts.
learning outcomes in the course in Est.
Õppeaine läbinud üliõpilane:
- selgitab erinevate energia salvestamise tehnoloogiate ja Power-to-X lahenduste tööpõhimõtteid, kasutusvaldkondi ning peamisi tehnilisi piiranguid;
- võrdleb elektrilise, elektrokeemilise, termilise ja keemilise salvestuse lahendusi energia- ja tööstussüsteemide vajadustest lähtudes;
- koostab salvestus- või Power-to-X lahenduse põhimõttelise energia- ja võimsusbilansi ning dimensioneerib süsteemi põhikomponendid;
- analüüsib Power-to-X väärtusahelaid, sh elektri muundamist vesinikuks, sünteetilisteks kütusteks, kemikaalideks või soojuseks ning nende integreerimist energia- ja tööstusprotsessidesse;
- hindab salvestus- ja Power-to-X lahenduste tehnilist, majanduslikku ja keskkondlikku teostatavust ning nende rolli paindlikkuse, varustuskindluse ja taastuvenergia integreerimise suurendamisel;
learning outcomes in the course in Eng.
After completing the course the student:
- explains the operating principles, application areas and main technical limitations of different energy storage technologies and Power-to-X solutions;
- compares electrical, electrochemical, thermal and chemical storage solutions based on the needs of energy and industrial systems;
- prepares a basic energy and power balance for an energy storage or Power-to-X solution and sizes the main system components;
- analyses Power-to-X value chains, including the conversion of electricity into hydrogen, synthetic fuels, chemicals or heat and their integration into energy and industrial processes;
- evaluates the technical, economic and environmental feasibility of energy storage and Power-to-X solutions and their role in increasing flexibility, security of supply and renewable energy integration;
- selects and justifies an appropriate energy storage or Power-to-X solution for a specific application case.
brief description of the course in Estonian
Energia salvestamise roll kaasaegsetes energia- ja tööstussüsteemides. Salvestustehnoloogiate klassifikatsioon ja võrdluskriteeriumid: võimsus, energiamaht, kasutegur, reageerimiskiirus, tsükliline eluiga, tööiga, ohutus ja maksumus. Elektriline ja mehaaniline salvestus. Elektrokeemiline salvestus: akutehnoloogiad ja superkondensaatorid. Termiline energiasalvestus.
brief description of the course in English
The role of energy storage in modern energy and industrial systems. Classification and comparison criteria for storage technologies: power, energy capacity, efficiency, response time, cycle life, service life, safety and cost. Electrical and mechanical storage. Electrochemical storage: battery technologies and supercapacitors. Thermal energy storage. Chemical storage and the principles of Power-to-X. Power-to-Hydrogen, Power-to-Gas, Power-to-Liquids, Power-to-Chemicals and Power-to-Heat value chains. Principles of electrolysis and the role of hydrogen as an energy carrier without duplicating advanced hydrogen technology studies. Use of CO2 in the production of synthetic fuels and chemicals. Integration of storage and PtX systems into power grids, local energy systems and industrial processes. Energy and power balances and fundamentals of system sizing.
