Õppeaine eesmärk on:
- tutvustada haruldasi muldmetalle sisaldavate püsimagnetite füüsikalisi aluseid;
- selgitada paagutatud ja sideainega Nd-Fe-B ja Sm-Co magnetite tööstuslikku tootmisahelat alates toorainest kuni valmistooteni;
- anda ülevaade kriitilistest toorainetest, tarneahela väljakutsetest ja jätkusuutlikkuse aspektidest;
- tutvustada kaasaegseid Nd-Fe-B magnetite taaskasutus tehnoloogiaid ning nende rolli ringmajanduses;
- arendada oskust hinnata Nd-Fe-B magnetite tehnoloogilisi, keskkonna- ja majanduslikke aspekte erinevates tööstusvaldkondades.

The aim of this course is to:
- introduce the physical principles of permanent magnets containing rare earth elements;
- explain the industrial production chain of sintered and bonded Nd-Fe-B and Sm-Co magnets, from raw materials to final products;
- provide an overview of critical raw materials, supply chain challenges, and sustainability aspects;
- introduce modern Nd-Fe-B magnet recycling technologies and their role in the circular economy;
- develop the ability to assess the technological, environmental, and economic aspects of Nd-Fe-B magnets in various industrial sectors.

Õppeaine läbinud üliõpilane:
- selgitab Nd-Fe-B magnetite füüsikalisi ja materjaliteaduslikke aluseid;
- kirjeldab Nd-Fe-B magnetite tööstusliku tootmise põhietappe ja nendega seotud tehnoloogilisi kitsaskohti;
- toob välja peamised Nd-Fe-B magnetite taaskasutus tehnoloogiad ja võrdleb nende tugevusi ja piiranguid;
- analüüsib haruldaste muldmetallide tarneahela strateegilisi, majanduslikke ja keskkondlikke väljakutseid;
- hindab Nd-Fe-B magnetite sobivust erinevate tööstuslike rakenduste jaoks.

- explains the physical and materials science foundations of Nd-Fe-B magnets;
- describes the main stages of industrial production of Nd-Fe-B magnets and the associated technological challenges;
- identifies the main recycling technologies for Nd-Fe-B magnets and compares their strengths and limitations;
- analyzes the strategic, economic, and environmental challenges of the rare earth supply chain;
- evaluates the suitability of Nd-Fe-B magnets for various industrial applications.

Aine annab ülevaate haruldastel muldmetallidel põhinevate püsimagnetite füüsikalistest alustest ja põhimõistetest. Tutvustatakse Nd-Fe-B magnetite tootmisprotsessi sulamite valmistamisest kuni kvaliteedikontrolli. Käsitletakse üleilmseid haruldaste muldmetallide tarneahelaid, geopoliitilisi sõltuvusi ning strateegiaid varustuskindluse suurendamiseks.
Tutvustatakse arendatavaid taaskasutus tehnoloogiaid ja nende keskkonna- ja majandusmõju. Arutatakse, kuidas rakendused kujundavad magnetitele esitatavad tehnilised nõuded.
Praktiline osa sisaldab külastust magnetite tootmisettevõttesse ja/või taaskasutus laborisse ning grupitöö vormis magnetomaduste mõõtmisi
brief description of the course in English
The course provides an overview of permanent magnets, their material properties, and the principles of rare-earth magnetism, with emphasis on sintered and bonded Nd-Fe-B. It introduces the Nd–Fe–B magnet manufacturing process, from alloy production through quality control to applications. The course also covers global rare-earth supply chains, geopolitical dependencies, and strategies to enhance security of supply.
Emerging recycling methods and their environmental and economic impacts are presented. The course discusses how applications shape the technical requirements imposed on magnets.
The practical component includes a visit to a magnet manufacturing company and/or a recycling laboratory, as well as measurements of magnetic properties.
