course aims in Estonian
Anda süstemaatiline ülevaade olulisemate tehnoloogiliste puiduliikide makro- ja mikroehitusest, puidu füüsikalistest ja mehaanilistest omadustest ning vastupidavusest keskkonnatingimustele.
course aims in English
This course provides a thorough overview to the anatomy of wood, the physical and mechanical properties and the durability of wood. Basic lab techniques are introduced by conducting and analyzing several laboratory experiments. This study prepares the students for the future courses dealing with the properties, uses and processing of wood.
learning outcomes in the course in Est.
Üliõpilane oskab analüüsida puidu makro- ja mikrostruktuuri ja omaduste vahelisi seosesid, tunneb olulisemaid puiduliike ja teab nende töötlemisviise, omab märkimisväärset teavet puitmaterjalide füüsikalis-mehaaniliste omaduste kohta. Üliõpilane teab füüsikalisi nähtusi nagu vesi puidus ja puidu kuivatamist, tunneb ära peamised puidurikete tüübid ja oskab analüüsida probleeme seoses vastupidavusega keskkonnatingimustele.

brief description of the course in Estonian
Kursus tutvustab puu kasvamise ja puitaine tekke protsessi. Okaspuidu ja lehtpuidu anatoomilist ehitust, milles on rõhuasetus seoste loomisel puiduehituse, funktsioonide materjali omaduste vahel. Puidu rakuline ehitus. Rakuseina ehituse ja puidu füüsikalis-mehaaniliste omaduste vahelised seosed. Vesi puidus. Puidu ja vee vahelise vastastikuse mõju selgitamine. Puidu ehituse ja füüsikalis-mehaaniliste omaduste vahelised seosed. Puidurikked ja looduslik vastupidavus. Laboratoorsed tööd sisaldavad puiduliikide makroskoopilise- ja mikroskoopilist tuvastamist, puidu niiskusprotsendi ja mehaaniliste omaduste määramist.
brief description of the course in English
The course introduces basic tree growth and wood formation, detailed study of softwood and hardwood anatomy that emphasizes the relationship between structure, function and material characteristics. Discussion of cell wall properties precedes an introduction to some of wood's physical and mechanical properties. The basics of the interaction between wood and water are explained. Physical and mechanical poperties of wood. Natural durability of wood and the main wood defects are discussed. The laboratories cover the macroscopic and microscopic identification of hardwoods and softwoods, the determination of the moisture content and mechanical properties of wood.
