Kursuse läbimisel õppur
- mõistab polümeeride kui makromolekulaarsete ainete põhimõttelist eripära,
- omab alusteadmisi polümeeride füüsikalisest ja keemilisest olemusest,
- tunneb polümeersete materjalide klassifikatsiooni aluseid,
- mõistab polümeeride struktuuri ja omaduste vahelisi seoseid,
- tunneb amorfse ja kristalliinse faasi mõisteid ja morfoloogilisi iseärasusi sellest tulenevalt.

Upon completion of the course a student:
- understands the principles of polymers as macromolecular substances,
- has basic knowledge of physical and chemical nature of polymers,
- knows the principles of classification of polymeric materials,
- understands the structure/properties relation of polymers
- has knowledge in concepts of amorphous and crystalline phases and resulting morphological peculiarities.

Üldine sissejuhatus makromolekulide teadusesse: põhilised erinevused madal- ja kõrgmolekulaarsete ühendite vahel, makromolekulide süntees, polümeeride füüsikalis-keemilised omadused, polümeeride nomenklatuur. Polümeeride struktuur: ahela ehitus, suurus ja konformatsioon, struktuuri ja omaduste vahelised sõltuvused. Molekulaarjõud polümeerides. Molaarmass ja selle jaotus. Polümeermaterjalide klassifikatsiooni põhimõtted, termilised faasiüleminekud polümeerides: klaasisiire, sulamine ja kristallumine. Polümeeride viskoelastsus. Polümeeride struktuuri ja mehaaniliste omaduste vahelised seosed. Kursus hõlmab erinevaid polümeeritüüpe, sünteetilisi ja looduslikke.

General introduction to macromolecular science: basic differences between molecules and macromolecules, the synthesis of macromolecules, physicochemical properties of polymers, nomenclature of polymers. Structure of polymers: constitution, size and conformation of molecules, the dependences between structure and properties. Molecular forces in polymers. Molar mass and its distribution. Classification principles of polymeric materials. Thermal transitions in polymers: glass transition, melting and crystallization. Viscoelasticity of polymers. Relation between structure of polymers and mechanical properties. Different types of polymers, synthetic and natural, are covered.
