The aim of this course is to introduce the cellular structure of organisms, the chemical composition and molecular structure of cells, as well as the principles of metabolic pathways and bioenergetics.

Aine läbinud üliõpilane:
- loetleb rakkude liike ja ehitust;
- omab ülevaadet rakkude koostisse kuuluvate biomolekulide keemilisest koostisest, struktuure ja mõistab nende bioloogilist rolli;
- kirjeldab energeetilise metabolismi radu ja mõistab seoseid nende vahel;
- loetleb geneetilise informatsiooni ülekande ja avaldumise mehhanisme ja vorme.

- names the types and structure of cells;
- has overview of the chemical composition and structures of biomolecules that are a part of cells and understands their biological role;
- describes the pathways of energy metabolism and understands the connections between them;

Biokeemia aine, vesi, nõrgad sidemed, pH. Raku ehitus. Valkude koostis ja struktuur. Ensüümkatalüüs - põhimõisted, kineetika, regulatsioon, mehhanismid, inhibiitorid. Süsivesikud ja rakukest. Lipiidid. Membraani struktuur, funktsioon ja membraantransport. Ainevahetus - põhimõisted. Glükolüüs ja glükoneogenees. Tsitraaditsükkel. ATP süntees. Fotosüntees. Glükogeeni lagundamine ja süntees. Lipiidide ainevahetus. Lämmastikku sisaldavate molekulide ainevahetus. Nukleiinhapete struktuur ja DNA replikatsioon. RNA süntees ja reguleerimine. Geeniekspressioon. Valgusüntees. Hormoonid ja signaalülekanne.

Subject of biochemistry, water, weak bonds, pH. Cell construction. Composition and structure of proteins. Enzyme catalysis - basic concepts, kinetics, regulation, mechanisms, inhibitors. Carbohydrates and the cell membrane. Lipids. Membrane structure, function and membrane transport. Metabolism - basic concepts. Glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. Citrate cycle. ATP synthesis. Photosynthesis. Glycogen breakdown and synthesis. Lipid metabolism. Metabolism of nitrogen-containing molecules. Structure of nucleic acids and DNA replication. RNA synthesis and regulation. Gene expression. Protein synthesis. Hormones and signal transduction.
