Õppeaine eesmärk on:
-harjutada üliõpilasi matemaatilise sümboolikaga ning arendada loogilist, analüütilist ja algoritmilist mõtlemist;
-anda alusteadmised matemaatilisest statistikast;
-õpetada mõistma erialaga seotud kontseptsioonide matemaatilist esitusviisi;
-õpetada kasutama matemaatikat bioloogiliste protsesside kirjeldamisel;
-õpetada kasutama arvutit keskkonnaalaste probleemide modelleerimisel.

The aim of this course is to:
-practice students with mathematical symbolism and develop logical, analytical and algorithmic thinking;
-to provide basic knowledge of mathematical statistics;
-teach to comprehend the mathematical representation of concepts related to the specialty;
-teach to use mathematics when describing biological processes;
-teach to use the computer when modeling environmental problems.

Aine läbinud üliõpilane:
- saab aru erialaga seotud matemaatilistest kontseptsioonidest ja esitusviisidest;
- saab aru sündmuste tõenäosuslikust olemusest ja kasutab lihtsamaid statistika rakendusi ning arvjooniseid;
- teab tõenäosusteooria põhitermineid, tunneb matemaatilise statistika põhitermineid, oskab leida punkt-ja vahemikhinnanguid; teab mitmesuguseid jaotusfunktsioone;
- kasutab liitprotsendilist kasvamist ning logaritmilist skaalat bioloogiliste protsesside kirjeldamisel;
- valdab maatriks-ja vektoralgebra põhitermineid, tunneb lineaarseid võrrandisüsteeme ning oskab lahendada erialale vastavaid tüüpülesandeid; mõistab erialaga seotud kontseptsioone ja meetodeid, oskab neid rakendada;
- tunneb matemaatilise modelleerimise tarkvara ja oskab seda kasutada erialaste ülesannete lahendamisel.

After completing this course the student:
- can understand the mathematical concepts and ways of presenting relating to the discipline;
- understands the probabilistic nature of events and uses simpler applications of statistics and figures;
- knows the basic terms of probability theory, knows the basic terms of mathematical statistics, knows how to find point and range estimates; knows various distribution functions;
- uses compound growth and a logarithmic scale when describing biological processes;
- knows the basic terms of matrix and vector algebra, knows systems of linear equations and can solve standard problems corresponding to the specialty; understands the concepts and methods related to the profession, knows how to apply them;
-is familiar with mathematical modeling software and can use it to solve professional tasks.
