Aine läbinud üliõpilane:
- omab laialdasi teadmisi Maateadustes;
- on oma doktoriprojekti teadusvaldkonnas rahvusvahelisel tasemel ekspert;
- on võimeline töötama rahvusvahelises uurimisrühmas oma kitsama eriala piires.

Student who has passed the subject:
- has extensive knowledge in Earth Sciences;
- is an expert at the international level in the research field of his doctoral project;
- is able to work in an international research group of his specialization.

Kursus läbitakse individuaalõppe vormis ja see sisaldab: doktoriõpinguteks ja uurimistööks sissejuhatavaid osasid; doktorandi kitsama eriala üldteoreetiline taust; ajalooline perspektiiv ja eriala areng; tänapäevased meetodid ja nende rakendus; eriala teaduskirjandus ja andembaasid; eriala uusimad ideed, teooriad ja teadussaavutused; eriala perspektiiv, olulisus, seosed naabererialadega ja koht ühiskonnas.

The course is taken on individual basis. It consists of introductory parts for doctoral studies and research; theoretical and historical background of specific topic related to the doctoral project; up-to-date methods and their application; scientific literature and databases; novel ideas and scientific theories in the field and breakthrough discoveries; perspectives and importance of the field, its place in the society and relations with other subjects of Earth sciences.
