Students make conclusions on the politico economic logic of the postwar growth model; the dynamics of the party system; the effects of electoral reforms on political dynamics; the causes of the lost decades and the policies to rekindle growth; and the structure of the Japanese welfare regime.

Kursus jaguneb neljaks osaks: Esimene osa annab taustateadmised pakkudes lühikest ülevaadet Jaapani majanduse ja poliitika ajaloost alates aastast 1854. Teine osa keskendub iseäralikule ühe partei demokraatiale, mis on välja arenenud alates 1945. aastast ning tegeleb küsimusega selle iseäraliku arengu põhjustest ja tagajärgedest. The course provides an introduction to the political economy of post-1945 Japan. The course consists of 4 main sections. Section 2 sets the background by providing a brief overview of the economic and political history of Japan since 1853. Section 3 focuses on the peculiar one-party democracy that has developed in Japan since 1945. What are the reasons for, and the political and economic consequences of, this peculiar development? Section 4 analyses the economic development of Japan since 1945. What were the reasons for the spectacular economic growth up to the early 1990s? Why has the Japanese economy stagnated since the 1990s? How does the current government seek to rekindle economic growth? Section 5 focuses on welfare state issues. What type of welfare state has developed in post-war Japan? How can welfare-state reform contribute to mitigating the problems of an ageing population, low female labour market participation, and one of the world's lowest fertility rates?
