Aine eesmärk on:
- tutvustada üliõpilastele magistritöödele esitatavaid põhinõudeid, magistritöö koostamise protsessi olulisi aspekte ning kaitsmisprotseduuri;
- tagada, et üliõpilane valib teema ja juhendaja, alustab ettevalmistusi magistritöö kirjutamiseks ning koostab magistritöö kavandi.

The aim of this course is to:
- introduce the main requirements set for the Master's thesis, important aspects concerning the process of writing the thesis and defence procedure;
- assure that the student selects the topic and supervisor for his/her thesis, begins preparations for writing Master's thesis and compiles the thesis plan.

Üliõpilane:
- otsib, analüüsib, hindab ja seostab vajalikku informatsiooni teadusartiklitest;
- lähtub magistritöö kavandist ning magistritööle esitatavatest põhinõuetest, sh eetikanõuetest,
- formuleerib uurimisprobleemi ja püstitab töö eesmärgi;
- valib töö eesmärgi täitmiseks sobiva metoodika.

The student:
- searches, analyses, evaluates and connects relevant information from academic articles;
- follows the main requirements set for the thesis plan and thesis, including ethical requirements;
- formulates research problem and objective of the work;
- selects methods suitable for achieving the objective of the work.

Magistritööle esitatavad nõuded. Magistritöö koostamise ja kaitsmise protsess. Potentsiaalsete juhendajate poolt pakutavate teemade tutvustused. Magistritöö fookus ja selle sisuline ülesehitus - uurimisprobleem, uurimisküsimused, uurimisülesanded, töö eesmärk ja panus, hüpoteesid, uurimisobjekt, struktuur, magistritöö kavand. Töö kirjandusega - teadusartiklid versus regulatsioonid, teooria versus empiirika, otsimine, süstematiseerimine, kirjanduse ülevaate roll ja vorm magistritöös. Andmete allikad - andmete otsimine, erinevate TalTechis kättesaadavate andmebaaside tutvustus. Metoodika valik. Argumentatsioon. Akadeemiline kirjutamine - teaduskeel, terminoloogia, kirjutamise protsess, akadeemilise teksti hea stiil. Magistritöö kaitsmisest. Retsenseeritud magistritööde arutelu. Üliõpilaste magistritöö kavandite arutelud.

Requirements concerning Master's thesis. The process of writing and defending a Master's thesis. Introduction of topics offered by the potential supervisors. The focus of the Master's thesis and its internal structure - research problem, research questions, research tasks, objective and contribution, hypotheses, research object, structure, thesis plan. Working with the literature - scientific papers versus regulatory documents, theoretical versus empirical papers, searching, systematising, the role and form of the literature review in a Master's thesis. Data sources - searching, introduction to databases available at TalTech. Methodology selection. Argumentation. Academic writing - academic language, terminology, writing process, academic writing. On the thesis defence. Discussion of reviewed Master theses. Discussions of student's theses plans.
