To explain and analyse the role and functions of science and technology in society.

Üliõpilane:
1) teab põhilisi teadussotsioloogilisi käsitlusi ja oskab neid võrdlevalt analüüsida;
2) oskab analüüsivalt ja sünteesivalt käsitleda tehnoloogia rolli tänapäeva ühiskonnas.

The students:
1) know the main theories of the sociology of science and can analyze them comparatively;
2) analyze and synthesize information concerning the role of technology in contemporary society.

Kursus kuulub teaduse ja tehnoloogia uuringute valdkonda. Antakse ülevaade põhilistest teadussotsioloogilistest lähenemistest ja analüüsitakse neid võrdlevalt. Süvendatult käsitletakse tehnoloogia rolli tänapäeva ühiskonnas. Vaadeldakse erinevaid teooriaid ja lähenemisi ning nende arendusi.

The course deals with science and technology studies. It introduces the main approaches in the sociology of science and analyzes them comparatively. In depth treatment will be given to the role of technology in contemporary society. Different theories and approaches as well as their developments are assessed.
